able to better define our mission statement: “Our goal is to create a solution that allows a home cook to safely and rapidly thaw meat for 1- 4 people, without compromising the quality of the meat.” Having a singular space as our focus, our goals for the quarter were to conduct rigorous testing to better understand the problem we were attempting to solve. These included a thawing time less than an hour, a max temperature difference less than 20 F, and an exposure to temperatures above 40 F less than 30 minutes. However, solutions like additional shelves and cabinets can be cumbersome, and require installation as well as a landlord’s approval. Featuring a lockable suction mechanism, three adjustable thick wooden shelves with gripped surfaces and bento box guard rails, a drying rack underneath, and a design that can be disassembled for storage and portability. The bracket has to consist of two members, AD and BC, that are joint at point D. The final design was selected taking into consideration many aspects, but prioritizing efficiency, strength, cost effectiveness and manufacturability. After deciding on a final design, we began manufacturing and testing brackets to better understand the factors that we wish to optimize. Two pieces make up the actual bracket (members BC and AC) and one piece is a cap placed on top of connection point C, distributing the force applied along the cross section of the members. Before manufacturing, we ensure that our sheet of steel is at least a size of 130 x 65 mm. Steps for manufacturing include: cutting steel pieces, bending, welding, a second round of cutting and shaving, drilling holes, and the final assembly. One issue was the load bearing point, as the force was no longer being applied in a theoretical 2D scenario, but over a 3D plane. To address this, the team adapted a reinforced cap design that would not impact the performance of the bracket itself, but experience failure modes separate from the bracket components while evenly distributing force along the 2D cross section. It was noted that errors in performance were largely not due to theoretical design, but errors in manufacturing. Unlike a MIDI keyboard, the responsive nylon strings of the Stringboard, along with the sleek body and digital compatibility, allow users to play with the slides, bends, and feel of a real guitar anywhere. The Stringboard also includes a ‘Lessons’ feature, inspired by the popular ‘Tap Tap’ apps, in which LEDs underneath the frets and strings indicate finger placements in accordance with the digital lesson, allowing anyone to learn guitar, whenever, wherever.
